People learn by seeing the action

Adults are skeptics. A visible demonstration of value is often required to open the mind to new learning. Otherwise messages are quickly forgotten.

Reading PowerPoint slides to educated audiences does nothing to enhance comprehension and recall. Engage both sides of the brain by creatively stimulating BOTH visual and aural input.

Improve instructional material development

Mercer Delta's Executive Learning Center tripled the size of its international program delivery to senior leaders. To keep up with the demands of shipping materials to over ten programs a week, a new process and material type was required to engage high potential leaders.

Action

Bulky binders of PowerPoint reprints were often left in hotels. They were replaced with streamlined notebooks containing reference aids and worksheets. Presentations were moved online and shippings were streamlined through a distribution center.

Results

Participant ratings of materials consistantly went up, material production costs declined, and thousands of dollars were made available for improvements in other program material aspects.

Align a global company around a new process

Environmental Resources Management (ERM) provides environmental, health & safety, risk, and social consulting services through 137 offices in 39 countries. To protect their 3,300 employees, a safety program was developed using visual communications that would be clear to non-English speakers.

Action

Five safety event types were identified and illustrated with fourteen classifications. An observation and feedback loop was descibed to diminish the number of situations that could lead to injuries on the job.

Identifying and reducing unsafe conditions, unsafe acts, and near misses is the first step in reducing recordable incidents such as damage to property, illness, or injury. Personal accountability and reporting empower everyone to take action.

Explain how a system works to clients

The Green Building Initiative is the Canadian alternative to England's better known LEED building process for environmental sustainability. GBI's 'Green Globes' rating system uses interactive software and an open modeling platform to support a framework that changes with building circumstances.

Action

The certification process and rating standards are illustrated to highlight the differences between Green Globes and LEED. A brochure describes participation levels for affiliates, sponsors, and supporters.

The materials are used in conferences and trade shows to highlight process advantages. For example, buildings in ski zones are not penalized for lack of air conditioning efficiencies.
